Position Overview - MENTAL HEALTH TECHNICIAN TRAINEE
Under immediate supervision, for a period of time from six and not to exceed twelve months, receives training and instruction and performs entry level, routine personal care services, educational, social, vocational, and therapeutic activities in the treatment and habilitation of intellectually disabled individuals at Shapiro Center. Attends formal classes for instruction in routine nursing practices and techniques to gain basic understanding in nature, cause, treatment and habilitation of intellectual disabilities. Ensures compliance with Illinois Department of Public Health requirements when performing duties.
Job Responsibilities - MENTAL HEALTH TECHNICIAN TRAINEE
1. For a period of time from six and not to exceed twelve months, receives training and instruction and performs entry level, routine personal care services, educational, social, vocational, and therapeutic activities in the treatment and habilitation of intellectually disabled individuals at Shapiro Center. Actively participates in classroom and on-the-job training classes. Receives training and provides physical support, with personal care services for individuals in bathing/showering, personal grooming, personal hygiene, clothing selection and dining skills.
2. Receives training in the Interdisciplinary Team process and assists under direct observation in the implementation of the active treatment/daily activity schedule on the programmatic unit. Escorts individuals on and off campus for vocational and recreational activities, appointments, etc. Under direct observation, ensures protection of individual rights in regard to clothing, personal items, choice, preferences, privacy, etc.
3. Through direct observation, achieves familiarity with each individuals sensory, medical, and physical condition and communicates to supervisor any changes in behavior, physical being, unusual incidents etc. and completes forms/reports, progress notes, etc. in a timely manner.
4. Maintains area in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
5. Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications - MENTAL HEALTH TECHNICIAN TRAINEE
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - MENTAL HEALTH TECHNICIAN TRAINEE
- Requires ability to participate in and successfully complete a comprehensive training program.
- Requires ability to provide the sincere interest necessary to work effectively with individuals with mental illness or developmental disabilities.
- Requires ability to develop skills necessary to provide basic personal and nursing care services and to participate in programs of care, treatment, and habilitation.
- Requires ability to understand and effectively carry out written and oral instructions.
- Requires ability to write clear and concise statements of individual care, treatment, and performance in accordance with approved guidelines.

- Requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Under immediate supervision, implements treatment programs for individuals in a designated living area; assists in providing physical care services and develops skills in care, treatment, development, and rehabilitation; participates in and escorts individuals to planned educational, vocational, recreational, and social activities. Ensures compliance with Illinois Department of Public Health requirements when performing duties.
Job Responsibilities - MENTAL HEALTH TECHNICIAN I
1. Implements daily treatment programs and schedules for individuals in a designated living area.
2. Provides and/or monitors personal care services for individuals such as bathing, toileting, feeding, dressing etc. Ensures individuals are well groomed including having hair combed, nails trimmed, shaved, good oral hygiene and having clean clothing in good repair and fit. Escorts individuals to dining areas, monitors and assists with meals and/or feeding in accord with each individual’s treatment plan. Assists in lifting individuals in and out of bed and wheelchairs.
3. Participates in and escorts individuals to vocational, recreational, and social activities, appointments, and other areas of the center. Observes individual’s behavior and interacts with individuals to assist in the individual’s improvement of social and interpersonal skills and participates in planned education. Documents progress in an individual’s active treatment plan or other designated records.
4. Maintains area in a safe, clean, and orderly condition and in compliance with Illinois Department of Public Health requirements.
5. Attends and completes mandated training for the department, facility, and programmatic area.
6. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications - MENTAL HEALTH TECHNICIAN I
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school.
- Requires successful completion of a comprehensive training program at the Mental Health Technician Trainee level.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - MENTAL HEALTH TECHNICIAN I
- Requires working knowledge of nursing care, first aid and personal and environmental hygiene.
- Requires elementary knowledge of Human Services rules and established individual care and treatment programs.
- Requires skill and ability to provide basic personal and nursing care services for individuals with mental illness or developmental disabilities.
- Requires ability to participate in routine programs of care, treatment, and habilitation.
Work Hours: 6:30 AM - 3:00 PM, 2:45 PM - 11:15 PM, 11:00 PM - 7:00 AM
Rotating days off; shift based on operational need
